Province Cancels Credit-Counselling Firm's Licence

The Manitoba Consumers' Bureau refused to say why the licence was cancelled, but a spokesperson for the Business Practices & Consumer Protection Authority of British Columbia (BPCPA) said its licence was temporarily suspended in B.C because of "financial and trust issues" before the company closed its B.C. branch.

Nancy Anderson, director of the Manitoba Consumers' Bureau, said Canada Debt Assistance had a collection-agency licence in Manitoba since 2003 and it was cancelled earlier this month.

"Consumers were made aware of the cancellation and our office has contacted as many of them as we could," Anderson said. "We advised them to contact their creditors and make other arrangements for payment."
