Cancer Relief May Lie in One Gene

Summary


Dr. Jeffrey Wigle and his team of graduate students at the St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre are studying Prox1 -- a gene that Wigle believes controls the growth of the lymphatic system.

Wigle said if they are able to remove or disable Prox1 in cancer patients, tumours wouldn't spread through the lymphatic system. Patients would be easier to treat, and chemotherapy and radiation would be more successful.

Wigle said Prox1 is the "key switch" that helps the immune system control infections, but may also be the culprit gene that enables tumours to spread.
