Summary
Aristotle, by all accounts a bright fellow, developed what was for many years accepted as the working model of the universe. His concept involved a series of intricate glass spheres, with orbits precisely timed and interlocked. The Earth, of course, was the centre of the universe. That notion must have been comforting in the face of so many unknowns. Our body of knowledge has expanded, if only in uncertain steps, and that brings with it a different degree of responsibility.
Most forms of transportation, such as planes and trains, have become enormously faster as well as more efficient. High-speed trains, capable of 300 km/h and more, are the norm in most of the developed world except North America. Magnetic levitation, where the wheels do not touch the rails, is no longer new technology. Early trains struggled to maintain 50 km/h. Planes have gone from Sopwith Camel to Piper Cub to supersonic within a handful of decades.[Alan Sidorov] is an experienced automotive racer, product tester and freelance journalist.
