[...] at a time when most government departments are "on pace to reduce spending below the amounts budgeted last spring," or so went the throne speech, we find it rather odd that the province is giving serious consideration to spending $1.3 million for upkeep on a $3.5 million helicopter for the Winnipeg Police Service. Yet as our colleagues at the Winnipeg Free Press wrote in August of this year, there is little evidence that using a whirlybird helps to "reduce the drug trade, clip the toxic effect of organized crime, cut human trafficking or keep guns off the street." [...] there's certainly not enough to justify spending taxpayer money taken from all Manitobans for the benefit of only a portion of the population, as the province looks to cut costs.
