Chess / Cecil Rosner

Summary

Back in the 1970s, Winnipeg experimented with a number of al fresco chess tournaments. And now, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ has revived the tradition by installing a summer-long chess presence at Merchant Park on Portage Avenue.

The Biz took an empty lot between Kennedy and Edmonton on the north side of Portage, beautified it, and installed a large chess set. With the generous permission of the lot's owners, they also equipped it with a number of chess tables and chairs, and are inviting people to come every Friday at noon hour throughout July and August to give the game a try.
