That's in stark contrast to its main rival, the Winnipeg Sun, which saw declines across the board. Its Monday to Friday circulation fell by 1.5 per cent (40,630 to 40,031), its Saturday circulation by 2.37 per cent (39,917 to 38,992) and its Sunday's numbers fell by 3.39 per cent (49,575 to 47,951).

"When most other newspapers across North America are seeing declines, the Winnipeg Free Press's commitment to being the best independent local paper (in Canada) appears to be paying off," he said.

Weekday circulation was down at three of the four, with the Toronto Star's dropping 12.51 per cent, the National Post falling 11.14 per cent and the Globe and Mail down marginally at 0.09 per cent. Monday to Friday circulation at the Toronto Sun was up 0.66 per cent.
