"Basement flooding is not unusual in Winnipeg. What's unusual in this case is we contributed to it. A gate that was closed should have been open," said [Barry McBride], who described the incident as a "horrific event" for the families affected by the backup.

He retreated when sewage started spewing like a fountain, threatening electrocution and filling his basement floor with "full-blown turds" and "many things floating in the water I didn't want to investigate."

After sewage is flushed from the station and city crews complete their maintenance, that gate was supposed to be reopened. But it wasn't, and city officials don't know whether that's because somebody forgot to reopen it or because the crews didn't have time to close the gate before heavy rains began.
