"She was just floored. She said, 'Dad, don't do it! Everybody in that school knows who you are, I don't want you there during my school day.' But she actually wanted me to coach her community team," [Stu Nixon] said, joking that after his sobbing subsided, he gained respect for her honesty. "I just thought, 'girls, I'll never figure them out!' I didn't take it personally and I made sure she knew that because I didn't want her to feel bad about it. That's OK, if you need that space, I'll give you that space!"

"I've heard stories of kids saying, 'can I just walk home? I'll even carry my hockey bag, I don't care, I just don't want to listen to all that!' That's a shame, and just hearing those stories have helped me too, to just say to myself, 'OK, shut up now!' and give [Dane] a chance to reflect by himself and not have to worry about those bad drives home. Then, we can try to be a father-son in those situations."

"I'll continue as long as she allows me to. I think, in community, she'll let me do it next year," he said. "I'm a football coach who's never played basketball. By the time she's in Grade 9, you'd hope she's being coached by someone more knowledgeable than me. Probably by the end of next year, my basketball coaching career will be done!"
