"I can appreciate the fact that these folks on the advisory board have to sign a confidentiality agreement" and not disclose details of police operations, [Mike Pagtakhan] said. But that shouldn't extend to policy, he argued: "You're going to lock the doors, lock the doors. To go to the extent you'll be within a cone of silence, that's beyond me."

"Our police service is very sensitive about the idea that suddenly, out in public, we're going to be talking about what we're doing to fight crime and giving the bad guys a 'heads up' as to where we're going," [Gord Steeves] said.

Steeves said he respected concerns that the public may have about the police board operating entirely covertly, but said it's a fine balance between the public's right to know and the police's need for discretion.
