The Correctional Service of Canada has also suspended [Laurie Bell]'s alleged boyfriend -- a correctional officer who supervised Bell at the Edmonton Institute For Women -- and launched an internal investigation, according to a source. Guards are under strict orders not to develop relationships with inmates.

One of Bell's release conditions was to report all romantic relationships to the parole board. A fellow inmate contacted justice officials in January, saying Bell had been bragging about a two-year relationship with the officer that began while she was locked up and had continued on the outside.

The inmate, who spoke to the Free Press but didn't want her name published because of safety concerns, claims Bell was also using authorized weekend absences from the halfway house to go visit her boyfriend in Edmonton. Bell had been allowed to leave the facility on the belief she was going to see family in Athabasca, Alta.
