The combined effects of 2005's summer flooding and this year's spring flood have exacerbated an already dire riverbank erosion situation to the point where it would take up to $130 million to prevent further decay, city riverbank management engineer Don Kingerski said yesterday during an afternoon tour of affected properties along the Red River.

City-owned lands targeted for attention include St. Vital, Churchill, St. John's, King's, Lyndale Drive, Crescent and Fort Rouge parks and along the Red River, a strip of the Assiniboine River near the Granite Curling Club, a small portion of Bunn's Creek and the Seine River at the intersection of Evans Avenue and Cusson Street.

"When I see this, it makes me sad for all the people who settled here years ago and may not have the means to fix up their properties," said Coun. Harry Lazarenko, who chairs council's riverbank management subcommittee and organized yesterday's tour.
