The rest of the hotel tax will help bring events such as the Junos, Grey Cups and World Junior Hockey Championships to Winnipeg and will also be used to help Destination Winnipeg "proactively and aggressively do what other cities do and go out and get conventions," [Sam Katz] said Wednesday during question period at city council.

The funding is expected to be substantial. Since the new tax was imposed, overnight stays generated $652,000 for the city in June, $560,000 in July and $615,000 in August, said Nelson Karpa, director of Winnipeg's assessment and taxation department.
