Summary


Judging from Era Vulgaris' reviews, this little nugget of rock history is only now dawning on the world's music critics. On the album's release, scores of writers lamented [NICK Oliveri]'s absence; Pitchfork.com admitted it seemed "cheap" to recall the smooth-skulled former bassist, but called his musical contributions "sorely missed."

"Our history allows that," says Van Leeuwen of the band's famously independent streak. "We really did go into this record without telling anybody. We didn't take any money (from the label), we just went to them and said, 'By the way, our new record is half done.'"

"I like that there's lots of opinions about the music," Van Leeuwen says, somewhat cagily, of the critical confusion. "It's complex. Even though when I listen back to it, it seems that some of the songs are very simple. But there's depth to it."
