"He was very happy," said [Davis]. "When he played hockey (he was a key player on the battalion's hockey team) they used to call him Smiley, you know, because he always had a smile on his face.

"He was really mad at the terrorists," his father Jim recalled. "He knew what this meant for him. He said, 'We'll have to deal with this.' He knew that sooner or later, he was going to war."
