Summary


Sweltering heat and stifling humidity had Ontario residents turning up air-conditioners yesterday and pushing the province's demand for electricity to "unprecedented" new highs.

"We have records that go back to 1840," said [David Phillips]. "And never in the City of Toronto has the temperature stayed so elevated as it did (Monday) night."

"Conservation is the fastest, cheapest and cleanest solution to our electricity crush, but it's the one that gets the fewest dollars," said Keith Stewart of the WWF.
