Knowing all this, any sensible cyclist will try to keep from surprising or irritating those car and truck drivers. Being very visible makes a lot of sense, so choose bright colours, not camouflage. Obeying the rules of the road, more or less, is a good idea because non-bike folks will have some clue of where you are going. The more or less equivocation is because I don't always come to a halt at stop signs, but at least am ready to. I take my road position positively, try to make clear signals, not rude ones, so whether on the triathlon flyer or my mountain bike, people give me room.
