Summary


[De Dion-Bouton]'s company struck gold in 1899 with the creation of a high-speed single-cylinder engine that would be licensed to 150 different carmakers and motorcycle manufacturers and find its way into de Dion's own cars.

De Dion was everywhere, his imprint all over the industry. His company even won the contract to provide engines to all New York City police vehicles, fire engines, taxis and buses. Part of the shipment included a parade car provided to the city's mayor. The car was fitted with the latest de Dion-Bouton V8. The engine was eventually studied and copied by many American car manufacturers and was considered the catalyst to America's love affair with the V8.

As for de Dion, more engines and equipment for buses, street sweepers, rail cars and boats would follow, as the name Dion-Bouton grew in importance, but not forever.
