Disabled Woman Wins Fight for Help with Dog

Summary

[Elly Brewster] has cerebral palsy and arthritis which limit her mobility. For the last six years, home care would take Brewster's service dog outdoors for a walk to go to the bathroom when they visited Brewster.

"I think we managed to persuade the director of home care that Courtney the dog is an extension of Elly. Home care is not so much helping the dog as helping Elly through the dog," [Naomi Levine] said.

Brewster's situation is unique. She doesn't require a seeing-eye dog, like many people who are visually impaired, but a service dog to help with day-to-day tasks. Not many Manitobans known a service dog is an option, but the help is indispensable, Brewster said. Without it, Brewster does not think she would be able to continue to work full-time.
