Winnipeggers, however, seem to enjoy living in the past. They loved and still love their NHL, though they had a funny way of showing it when a franchise was located here. There's the great myth of the city's NHL days, that the rink was always full and those mean old bastards at the NHL office in New York just didn't like us.

It's the AHL's one weak area there are no superstars. The fact that fans wouldn't go to see a very good AHL playoff series this week in Toronto while the Leafs were on the golf course, combined with the fact the region has never supported junior hockey very well, makes Toronto's label as the world's best hockey city a great fiction.

"I feel very proud of what our organization has accomplished over 10 years," [Mark Chipman] said during last night's game. "This is a tough business. There have been some challenges, but I don't think anybody in our organization has been second-guessing ourselves.
