Dream Big, Manitobans -- Like We Used To

Summary

Then, there's the other concept bouncing around Winnipeg right now -- the idea to put a bubble over the football field at the Bombers' new stadium. It would allow sports teams to use the field in the winter. Again, I think we could go further. Think of the tourism possibilities if we put a dome over the entire city in the winter. Snowmobilers could still get their fix simply by heading outside the perimeter. Then again, if we extended the dome north, we could enclose Grand Beach and market it as a close-to-home alternative for winter getaways. In the summer, we could change it to a screen dome and keep the mosquitoes out. Wait a minute. That might actually keep the mosquitoes in, and the birds and monarch butterflies out. OK, so there are still a few flaws in my plan, but at least I'm trying to think big.

Yet, if we think about it, the people who built this province must have been dreamers. Aboriginal culture is rich with spirituality, with steadfast belief in stuff you can't see or prove scientifically. The young women who jumped in canoes with rough-looking voyageurs didn't know what they'd find out west. They couldn't have known if they'd ever see their families or friends again, and yet they went anyway, choosing adventure over security. Those Grey Nuns went on to run our first hospital.
