Editorial - Canada's Piracy Folly

Summary

The federal government's decision to extend the term of service of the frigate HMCS Winnipeg fighting pirates in the Gulf of Aden will be welcomed by Canadians concerned that their nation continue to meet its international responsibilities. It will also be welcomed by Canada's NATO allies, which requested that the warship stay a little longer as the problem in the seas off Somalia grows worse.

The policy is called "catch and release," and while it may work well in sports fishing, it has no place in warfare. Even so, in announcing the extension of the Winnipeg's tour, Mr. [Peter MacKay] made no mention of changing that policy to catch and arrest.

Canada could do the same. Canada is, in fact, one of Mr. MacKay's "certain countries" where trials of pirates could occur if Ottawa would take the responsibility.
