CANADA is one step closer to establishing a do-not-call registry to protect the privacy of Canadians from intrusions by telemarketers. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission announced Tuesday that it is seeking proposals as to who might operate the registry, which in essence is a list of telephone numbers that telemarketers will be prohibited from calling if the party at the number has so requested. Given that legislation to create the registry was passed more than 30 months ago, that a survey found that 97 per cent of Canadians find unsolicited calls annoying, and that 66 per cent say they will sign up immediately, it is fair to criticize the CRTC for foot-dragging.
