Summary

Osama bin Laden will not be content if we simply cede him Andalusia. He demands a world occupied by no infidels, only by Muslim fundamentalists. This war that began Sept. 11, 2001, will go on until he is victorious or destroyed. One of his lieutenants went on television last week to warn the infidels that they have two choices -- convert to Islam or be cast into Hell, a journey that al-Qaida and the jihadi groups are working furiously to facilitate.

Canada opposed the Iraq war and refused to take part in it without a United Nations mandate, which has never been forthcoming. Most of the Europeans opposed it as well, although perhaps for more practical reasons -- trade is a big issue for them. The response of Canadians appears primarily to be driven by an astonishingly intense misunderstanding of Mr. Bush's policies, and an almost personal dislike of the president himself. It was Iraq and Mr. Bush, perhaps, more than anything else that started to turn the course of opinion in this country.

While many Canadians are driven by a post-9/11 anti-Americanism, some may have fallen victim to the idea that the war on terror has become a "phony war," something that no longer seems to be quite as clearly our business as it did five years ago. In the last two years, there have bombings aimed at westerners in Bali, in Madrid, in London and plots in France, in Germany and one to blow up pubic buildings in Toronto, but the suspects have quickly been apprehended. There has been nothing anywhere near as spectacular as what happened on that evil day five years ago.
