ONE in every five Canadians is an immigrant today, a proportion unequalled since the 1930s, when the country's population had grown with the waves of emigrating Europeans. Now, though, the newcomers are more likely to be speaking Chinese. The Doer government's push to staunch Manitoba's declining population was also noticed in the Statistics Canada report on Tuesday. The number of immigrants to this province more than doubled between 2001 and 2006 over the previous four years.
