Summary
The installation of a new prime minister, Shinzo Abe, last week is an indication that Japan is shifting towards the latter and that the shift is gaining pace. Mr. Abe replaces Junichiro Koizumi as prime minister. Mr. Koizumi was a radical reformer who shocked Japan's political and economic roots, inspiring new confidence among Japanese and heightening old fears among Japan's Asian neighbours, particularly China and South Korea, which see in an unleashed Japan the grim ghosts of a bloody history, the horrors of the 1930s and the Second World War that resulted from Japanese aggression.
