Editorial - Too Many Hospitals

Summary

It is a complex question. One answer may lie in the fact that Manitoba, for its population, has too many hospitals, the largest single health expense, taking up about 40 per cent of the budget. Winnipeg, for a city of its size, is an anomaly in Canada, with six hospitals (including Misericordia), two of which are tertiary care, teaching hospitals. Further, a study by the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy in 2000 of the use of the province's rural hospitals revealed that beds were empty in many for much of the time and that when patients were admitted they were kept too long. Saskatchewan recognized this problem in the mid-1990s and closed many of its rural hospitals, a politically unpopular move. Manitoba has not closed hospitals and spends about $150 per person more on hospitals than Saskatchewan.
