111National Chief Phil Fontaine would have preferred to hear the word "apology," but he recognized that the pontiff had gone as far as his conscience and faith would allow. Other Christian churches have long ago apologized for their roles in the residential schools question, but Chief Fontaine said as far as he was concerned, the Vatican meeting would "close the book" on the issue of apologies. It is also significant that the historic meeting came at Pope Benedict's invitation, which itself was an acknowledgment of the need for a reckoning.
