Summary
It is bad news, however, that interest in serving as a police officer in Winnipeg apparently is on the wane. While 346 applications for 48 spots might appear otherwise, the fact is that five years ago there were almost 500 applicants and numbers have been falling steadily ever since. Why that might be is difficult to explain. Certainly demographics are playing a part -- there are relatively fewer eligible young men and women than there had been in the past. It might very well be that the allure of big paycheques "out west" has reduced the potential pool of candidates -- a condition that could reverse itself given the deepening negative impacts the recession is having in Alberta and B.C., in particular. And it might be that events such as the Taman inquiry have diminished the lustre of the job.
