Long Plain First Nation appears to be such a place. The reserve decided last March to launch a controversial program to encourage its children to go to school. High school students, who are bused to nearby Portage la Prairie, receive $50 a month for a good attendance record, while those who graduate from Grade 12 receive a bonus of $1,000. The band's development corporation expects to pay out $50,000 in this school year, while another $30,000 is being spent on a lunch program for the bused students.
