Summary
Summer is the time to relax and to nurture our burned-out souls. It's time for peace and quiet; it's time for a vacation. Yet, taking a vacation is not always the easiest thing to do, especially when work has become such an important part of our lives and our personal identities. It's not easy for anyone who has focused all week on projected sales figures or interviewing a slate of candidates to simply leave these work thoughts behind. And it's not easy to park these work-related thoughts when our Blackberry and other addictive techno gadgets remain so close at hand.
Unless you can park your work-related thoughts, compartmentalize, or let go, you are really nothing more than a vacation zombie -- physically present in body but not in mind. Someone should take a picture -- yes, that's you, coffee or beer cup in hand and a blank stare in your face. You see, your mind is not on vacation, it's still at work. In fact, this phenomenon is so psychologically powerful that when your mind is at work and your body is on the deck, you won't even hear your spouse or children talking to you. You are in a state of suspended animation; you've become nothing more than a human tool and a work slave. You're no longer a whole person who enjoys all aspects of life. And that's downright scary.Summer is almost everyone's favourite time of year, yet many people, particularly true workaholics and techno geeks have difficulty pulling away from work and fully enjoying a vacation. Those who thrive on adrenaline find it very hard to mentally leave the workplace behind. But for your own sake, you have to do it. If you don't rejuvenate you will lose your creativity, innovativeness and sense of drive. And if you don't take time for vacation with your family and friends, you'll soon find that zombie status has no value either at work or at home.See the full content of this document
