On the night before Christmas Eve, McCaskill and his wife were at their home, located about four miles outside of Gladstone, sipping some early evening coffee when their mobile home's smoke detector went off. Though a heating unit had been placed in a crawl space underneath the home to thaw some frozen water pipes, Foxon said fire officials are not convinced that was the source of the fire. The last two weeks before Christmas were always the busiest time of year for the Gladstone senior, as he spent his time visiting schools, churches, the local hospital and care homes and the senior's apartments.
