"(As the secondary coach before taking over) I'd only thought about how a defensive back backpedals, how he covers man-to-man, how he plays Cover 2. That was my focus. And I thought, 'Well, if I'm going to do this, I better have a philosophy about this overall deal.' And I looked at it from a player's viewpoint and a player wants two things from his coach: he wants to be treated right, No. 1, and he wants to be coached.
"Being 'treated right' is a lot of things," [Mike Riley] explained. "It's putting an arm around a guy and giving him a hug when he needs it and it's discipline when he needs it. It's caring. It's being involved in that way. I think players want that. But you can't have that without the coaching, because they all want to be better and they all want to have a career and they want to play and they all want to be on a good team.
