A new option is a dual-mode exhaust system similar to that used on the high-performance Z06 model. Engine-vacuum-operated outlet valves control noise at smaller throttle openings, but they open up for more performance at wide open throttle. It's not identical to the Z06 exhaust, though: the base Corvette's exhaust uses 2.5-inch diameter piping, while the Z06's is a three-inch system. The exhaust adds six horsepower and four lb.-ft. of torque, for 430 h.p. and 428 lb.-ft. total.

As alluded to above, this isn't the first eight-speed; Lexus beat everyone to the punch with the transmission they bolted into their new LS460. What is notable about the new ZF gearbox is that it's capable of handling more torque than the company's six-speed automatic (which was the world's first for automotive applications when it appeared in the 2001 BMW 7-series) but is no bigger or heavier than the six-speed -- a significant achievement.

Although larger, Volvo's C30, the Audi A3 and BMW's upcoming 1 Series are also gunning for the same prospects. The biggest issue may be the cost of the Mini's optional packages, which pushed the tester's price to more than $30,000. Heated seats are a welcome addition considering Canada's climate, but why make them part of a $1,900 Premium Package, which includes a glass sunroof, on-board computer, auto-on headlights and an auto-dimming interior mirror?
