It's worth noting, now that the required Alberta-bashing is out of the way, that the much larger Alberta Society of Artists paid the entire cost for the production of a gorgeous full-colour catalogue to accompany the show. Not only that, they put a Manitoba artist on the cover, Naomi Gerrard, whose The Heart of the Prairie uses seeds and bits of hay, arranged to create a circle of joyous dancers.

The common ground extends not just across themes, but also into the styles of Forks. On the work of Alberta artist Judy Matlock, for example, there's more than a little resemblance to that of L.L. FitzGerald, the local painting legend who was the only western member of the Group of Seven. Matlock's sinuous, curvy trees show that FitzGerald's influence is alive and well in other parts of the country, even decades after his death.
