According to reliable Israeli sources, [Barack Obama]'s Middle East policy is very much inspired by the policies of former president Jimmy Carter. Just as Carter tried to reverse Richard Nixon's and Henry Kissinger's policies toward the Soviet Union and extremist Arab regimes, Obama is trying to reverse the policies of president George W. Bush towards Russia, Syria, Iran and the various Palestinian groups.
Of all confrontational flashpoints, the prospect of Iran becoming nuclear is the most serious. This became clear during the official visit to Washington this week of chief of general staff Gen. Gaby Ashkenazi. Both Israel and the U.S. now agree that Iran has crossed the technological threshold and has collected enough enriched uranium -- in diluted form -- to produce a bomb.
