"She always looks up at the moon and says, 'That's my daddy, he's watching me,' " the child's mother, Janine Mousseau, said Tuesday in reading her victim impact statement. Her common-law husband, Sonny James Bjarnason, 20, was shot and killed last August while playing a game of cards with his best friend inside an Alexander Avenue home.

"I'm truly sorry for your loss. Nothing like this was intended to happen. I have much love and respect for Sonny and his family. He was my best of best friends and that will never change," said [Tyson Galen McKay]. "I hope you can find the heart to forgive me. If you don't, I'll understand."

"That's bulls--t," one of Bjarnason's family members shouted in court as provincial court Judge Theodore Lismer endorsed the proposed sentence. Lismer caused a minor stir when he accidentally declared "24 years" instead of "24 months" as the remaining penalty, prompting mock cheers from the gallery.
