Summary
There's the usual Canadiana such as the inevitable perogies, cabbage rolls and quiches, as well as various versions of lasagna. But I was in a British frame of mind, and confined myself to what represents British comfort food to me, the meat pies. They're sold at prices you'll probably never find in now-astronomical London, ranging from $2.85 for a five-inch beef pie to $10.50 for a nine-inch steak one.
Not everything here comes in pastry. Don't overlook some of the city's better meat balls in onion gravy, for instance, or, if you're in a hurry at breakfast time, the Scotch eggs -- hard-boiled and coated with sausage meat -- or (if you're prepared to do some quick cooking) the excellent English-style bacon with its mild, slightly sweetish cure.They also carry excellent presunto -- a mild-cured Portuguese ham similar to prosciutto, as well as at least five kinds of olives -- one of the darker ones is perfect for tapenade, which takes a few seconds to whip up (with anchovies, garlic and olive oil) in a blender or food processor, and is great spread on hard-boiled eggs or toast.
