Initially introduced in 1966 as the base engine for the Tempest, the six-cylinder had a very European flare. A major engineering breakthrough, the Pontiac six was the first overhead-cam engine offered in an American passenger car since 1927. At 230 cubic inches, it featured a single overhead camshaft and produced a respectable 165 horsepower at 4,700 r.p.m. Now, as the base engine in the '67 Firebird, it gave owners 25 horsepower over the 230 CID engine in the Camaro.
[Al Bader]'s Sprint is one of 6,809 built in 1967 and just one of 3,846 equipped with an automatic transmission. A fairly rare car by today's standards, the Sprint caught the judge's eyes at this year's Fabulous 50's Flashback Weekend car show and Bader was awarded Best Pontiac honours.Firing Up a Firebird Classic
