Flying Priest Rose Above Misfortune

Summary


The priest learned to fly during the Second World War. As a "Hump Pilot" posted in central Asia, he flew supplies over Mount Everest and thousands of miles into China, earning a medal presented by President Chiang Kai-shek. At the end of the war, [Dale Johnstone] flew sick and emaciated Commonwealth prisoners of war in Japan back home.

"Our family was invited to people's homes for supper," he said. When Rev. Johnstone became the principal of Gordon's Indian Residential School, rather than push assimilation he encouraged students to practice their customs.

"The odds were against him," Dale said. "He was among the poorest of the poor there. But he was a very smart man with strong values."
