Former North Bay hotel declared heritage site.

Back in the day, the Empire Hotel in downtown North Bay was considered the city's social and business hub.

The hotel's builder, Leo Mascioli, was recognized by the City of North Bay for his contribution 88 years after its original opening.

The North Bay Municipal Heritage Committee unveiled a commemorative plaque recognizing the history of the property. The plaque recognizes the properties, people and stories that make up North Bay's heritage, and is located near the corner of McIntyre Street and Fraser Street.

Now a retirement home, the Empire is the only structure in North Bay to be designated a Priority One, the highest possible level of historical and architectural significance, and be part of the Heritage Site Plaque program.

"There are many ways that the Empire has helped shape, support and change our local history," said Mayor Al McDonald, during a special ceremony on Sept. 6. "It's important that this piece of our community's heritage is not forgotten, and that our community is given the occasion to learn more about it and the man behind it."

The library at the Empire Living Centre will also be known as the Leo Mascioli Library.
