There's no hiding when [Tippi] looks for punchline victims in the audience. So be a good sport, dahling, especially if you're a young male. Tippi doesn't mind if you're dumb, as long as you're delicious. HHH
LIVING in a fantasy world is way more fun than dealing with reality, but try telling that to an asylum psychiatrist. Three patients try to hang on to their illusions in this Winnipeg company's fringe debut. Avery (Lygia Ramcharan) thinks she's a child; Stephanie (Carly Kowalski) claims amnesia after her parents die mysteriously, and Catherine (Ashley Hirt) believes she's a queen -- one with a full deck of cards she refers to as her "photo album." When a doctor (Chad Heath) administers a reality check, the women bond together to stop him, with good reason in Catherine's case -- her queen is a dead ringer for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest's Nurse Ratched, but she's far more scary after the cure. There's some cool dancing (that goes on slightly too long) and many homemade raps that act as musical interludes. It's a neat idea performed with gusto by [Jeff Martinez], a Winnipeg native and a veteran of sketch comedy. But it doesn't really work. It's not a comedy or a parody, because it's not that sharp or funny. And it moves much too quickly for a drama. It's too shallow to allow for any emotional connection with Ice Ball, and the final "follow your dreams" lesson is a little trite. Martinez fills up the stage, but the show comes off as an excuse for him to live out his Eminem fantasies.Fringe - 20 Years to Life
WHO'S AFRAID OF TIPPI SEAGRAM?
Colette KendallPlayhouse Studio (Venue 3), to July 28WHAT with Britney running around sans underwear, Tyra gaining all that weight and Anna Nicole going to meet her maker, the past year has proven a comedy goldmine for raunchy-minded cougar Tippi Seagram.Yes, dahlings, the faded, martini-dependent star has returned from Hollywood with more biting quips about sex, aging and celebs. Ontario's Colette Kendall plays Tippi with an appealingly affected mid-Atlantic accent borrowed from the Kate Hepburn school. In this followup to Happy Hour, which also featured the Seagram character, Kendall stumbled a few times over her material. She doesn't project her voice well. And, truthfully, there's far more fun-fur than mink in her joke-writing. But the five-times-married Tippi, topped by a frowsy blond wig, gets such naughty fun out of shocking us that she's tough to resist. There's no hiding when Tippi looks for punchline victims in the audience. So be a good sport, dahling, especially if you're a young male. Tippi doesn't mind if you're dumb, as long as you're delicious. Walker are often funniest when his pitiable characters' predicaments are the most desparate. In the third part of his Suburban Motel series, Risk Everything finds lowlife gambling addict Carol, following a vicious beating, holed up in a seedy room with her former-hooker daughter Denise and ex-con husband R.J. The duplicitous Carol eventually admits that she has placed them all in mortal danger by swindling a notorious gangster of $68,000.The seedy underbelly of Walker's world is well drawn by...Try vLex for FREE for 3 days
