Summary
The so-called Hydrogen Highway is in the news a lot, with supporters including California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger promoting the idea. Kind of amusing, in a way, that the man who made driving a Hummer seem cool is now doing the same thing for the other side. Building safe sidewalks and bike paths in the state would likely have a far greater positive effect, both for the environment and the fitness of California's population. That angle isn't as catchy as an ecologically harmless fuel. The trouble is, right now the net energy needed to produce hydrogen fuel is greater than the energy produced. When that changes, the HH and Arnie will be in business.
It is not easy to get a diesel engine to meet the latest emissions regulations. However, and no surprise, Honda appears ready to bring out a compression ignition engine that meets all the toughest standards. Mercedes and others manage the same compliance, but with an extra injection of fluid into the exhaust to help neutralize oxides of nitrogen.
