Manitoba Justice Minister Dave Chomiak said he is pleased Ottawa wants to bring in tougher penalties against organized crime. "What happens on the street is not pretty," Chomiak told reporters. "Organized crime is a plague. It is probably the worst thing we're dealing with in the country."

"We want to point out that this government is only focused on (one) end of the spectrum," said B.C. Liberal MP Ujjal Dosanjh. "They're only focused on being tough. They're not focused at all on crime prevention or providing more resources to the police, providing better techniques, better investigative tools."
