"Absolutely, it was a tough decision," said [Nick Kowalchuk], after being sprung from the stage cell he shared with actor Steve McIntyre. "We've been approached for years about stretching the limits of the festival and thought we would give it a test shot. It's a great venue."

The 232-seat facility will be home to four shows, including the latest (Lucrezia Borgia) from local fringe star Joseph Aragon and imports from Australia (Die Roten Punkte) and Spain (Flamenco con Fusion 2007). The Gas Station's executive director Geoffrey Devenney successfully lobbied for the expansion. It didn't hurt his chances that he doubles as the fringe festival's production consultant.

"It's a natural fit," said Devenney, who was appointed to the GST's top job last November. "The theatre is situated in the most populated and most artistic neighbourhood.
