West led the five of clubs to East's ace. This is how a good defender will approach the problem of getting four tricks. Assuming from the lead that there are two club tricks available and, if there is a trump trick to be had it will not go away, the defense needs two more tricks. That can come from a variety of holdings with West -- the aces of spades and diamonds or one of those aces and a trump trick, or the king of spades and an ace. But there is one other possibility that must be catered to: partner holding the ace-queen of spades.
