A contingent of RHA officials, along with officials from the province's departments of Health and Labour and Immigration, and the College of Registered Physicians and Nurses, travelled to the island country of the Philippines on Nov. 7, returning just over a week later with conditional work agreements for more than 130 registered nurses.Nearly 30 per cent of those nurses were snapped up by the Assiniboine RHA, which is desperately hoping that the future employees will help ease the severe nursing shortage that has gripped the region for some time now. Meantime, Brandon RHA officials also went on the international trip hoping to launch a pre-emptive strike against what officials expect will be a litany of nursing retirements over the next several years, says Jason Marchand, vice-president of human resources and support services.
