Heating Woes Give Drivers Cold Comfort

Summary

QUESTION: I have an interior heating problem with my 2005 Camry SE. On cold days from start-up until I have travelled at least 30 kilometres, with the heater control on body/defrost, there is such a cold draft on the driver's and passenger's knees and upper legs that my wife has to place a blanket on her knees to keep warm until the entire interior of the vehicle reaches a comfortable temperature. There is no cold air on the knees when the heater control is in the floor position but that is not feasible on frosty days when the windshield is cold or snow is blowing on the windshield, so we have to use the defrost and some interior heating at the same time.

ANSWER: If you had good heat last winter but it is terrible now, the problem isn't likely to be fixed by flushing the cooling system or heater core. A corroded heater core is often accompanied by a gradual loss of heat. Water pumps seldom cause a loss of heater performance so I wouldn't replace the water pump at this time.

Finally, the outlet fitting on the engine block for the hose going to the heater core may be restricted. Usually the factory has a small port in the fitting so coolant doesn't flow too quickly through the heater core. This port may be partially blocked. Remove the heater hose at the engine and clean the port out with a drill bit or piece of wire.
