Hecla 4 Deny Fraud, Forgery Charges

Summary

Marvin Benson and [Warren Helgason] were members of an advisory committee set up under the former Filmon government to oversee resettlement of the Lake Winnipeg island in the late 1990s. [Patricia Benson] is the wife of Marvin, who also leases the Hecla marina from the provincial government. [Marlene Greenfield] is Marvin Benson's sister and Helgason's wife.

According to information filed in court by the prosecution, Marvin and Patricia Benson allegedly forged a Hecla resettlement form in 1997 in the name of Marvin's elderly aunt, Ruby Grimolfson, who no longer lives in Manitoba. They are also accused of forging an application by Grimolfson for Lot 4 in Hecla Village as joint tenant with Patricia Benson. In 1998, the couple allegedly forged Grimolfson's signature on a document signing her interest in the lot over to Patricia.

Marvin Benson is also accused of forging a document in 1999 that assigned former Hecla landowner Emily M. Thordarson's interest in Lot 7 to his Selkirk friend, Mary Louise Lazarenko, who is related to the Thordarsons.
