Summary
JEROME, Arizona -- Not surprisingly, since he's the chief designer for an automobile company that relies on its good looks for success, Ian Callum does not think form follows function but rather that the two are one. I don't know what that means other than that the shape of the new XF, Jaguar's latest sedan, is crucial to the success of what Mike O'Driscoll, Jaguar's North American president, calls the most important car in the storied company's history.
If there is a complaint -- and it is minor -- it's that from its side profile it suggests Lexus's GS 430 and not the Mercedes CLS. In all other regards, though, the XF is its own car. If you're not serious about buying one, don't ogle it from a three-quarters rear view -- it's like trying to resist Heidi Klum in full lingerie mode.Blitzing Arizona's sinuous Highway 89A in a scofflaw manner, the XF's front end stuck like glue, while switching the traction control system to TRAC mode allowed the rear tires to wiggle a little over the snow-covered patches near Jerome. Putting it into perspective, the SV8 -- which Jaguar is categorically not calling an R model, lending credence to rumours that an even hotter version of the XF is in the works -- offers almost-M5-like handling with a 550i-like ride.See the full content of this document
