44"We're the only place in town that sells this," says Denis Remillard, handing over a bag of what looks like Swiss cheese, but is labelled "host cuttings." Denis and his wife, Lise, run Jardins St. Leon -- an open-air farmers' market with a decidedly French-Canadian accent at 419 St. Mary's Rd.

Today, Jardins St. Leon features everything from jujubes to tourtires to bedding plants. But "real" fruits and vegetables continue to be the market's raison d'être. (Everywhere you turn at St. Leon, you'll spot signs promoting "real" peas, "real" beans, etc.)

"In French, if something is fresh it's called vrai," Denis says. "My dad always told me, 'Go to the garden and fetch me a vrai tomate -- a 'real tomato.' Everybody in our community understands that, so when we were trying to come up with a motto of some sort, we went with the 'real thing' approach."
